Does this problem occur on J2SE 1.4.x or 5.0.x ? Yes / No (pick one)
No
Operating System Configuration Information (be specific):
Windows XP PRO SP2
IE 7.0
Hardware Configuration Information (be specific):
Sony VIAO laptop 2.8 Gz
1.25 GB RAM
Bug Description:
During the upgrade process and everytime the webstart cache viewer is accessed, it tries to redownload the representative pictures. This causes a HUGE performance penality for us, since the route to some of our hosts are not always accessible.
I can't express to you how critical this is to us. Since we have remote sites that are not always online, our timeouts are a bit longer than normal. This causes inaccessible sites to make the cache viewer take 5 minutes to come up. The upgrade took HOURS!
This is really unacceptable UI behavior anyway, as it should not make the user wait for blocking network calls to complete before an application comes up. Since this image fetching is probably accidental, please fix this quickly.
Steps to Reproduce (be specific):
Do a snoop on your machine and open the cache viewer. TCP connections will abound.
On my machine, I have a couple of external sites that I have accessed with webstart that I know I don't access at other times. One of these is icesoft. I tried a demo of their PDF Viewer that was accessible via webstart. Every time I open the cache viewer now, I get a request for http://download.icesoft.com/pdf/jws/images/med_globe.gif. That is the one that caught my eye, but I can see webstart trying to get a lot of other pictures from sites that I have accessed as well.
