Request to change the install method for the java.com Internet Explorer (IE) user, but maintain the tracking mechanism-ping for IE java.com downloads.
NOTE: This pertains only to 32-bit IE for Windows
Currently, IE users coming to java.com to download the latest JRE are prompted to install ActiveX control in order to download, through the typical flow. The download user experience is disrupted by this Windows ActiveX control prompt, and confuses many of the java.com novice users, some of whom decide not to proceed with the download.
Discussion in the Java deployment and download meetings have concluded we can improve the user experience by presenting an .exe, rather than the cab file, thereby bypassing the ActiveX control dialog. The .exe should record to installstat as 'jcab' method, similar to the current jcab file.
Steps to replicate the prevalent java.com download experience:
1) Make sure you are on Windows platform, 32-bit
Windows XP or Vista
Use the Internet Explorer browser
To see Deployment Toolkit plugin experience, make sure your browser detects javascript
2) Go to java.com
Click on the download button
3) you should be routed to either of these page
http://java.com/en/download/inc/windows_new_ie.jsp or
http://java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_ie.jsp
