This is umbrella bug for various efforts to improve robustness of the applets by:
   1) reducing memory consumption by the applets
   2) ensuring applet memory is released when applet is not used
   3) avoiding applet start failures due to attempts to use VM with full heap
   4) avoiding VM crashes
