Win 7, 64-bit system
JRE 6u14 or later installed (based on uninstall dialog)
(no record of exact version in log files in %TEMP%)
AU said 6u20 was available,
then said Java was "already installed, reinstall?"
then it uninstalled 6u14 which said iexplore.exe must be closed
(6u14 uninstall functionality, not yet 6u20 FIU code)
after closing IE and clicking Retry it went on to installing 6u20.
The machine may have been already updated and PIP to 6u18, but the uninstall for the last full install (6u14) gets run.

Here are some responses to the “Already Installed” issue:
1) I kept receiving auto-update requests to install Java 6, update 22 only to have the installation program report that it was already installed. After studying your website carefully I realized that I had both version Java 6, update 18 and version Java 6, update 22 already installed and that 6-18 needed to be removed. When I manually removed it the auto-update requests stopped. May I suggest that, like the rest of the computing world, your update installation programs automatically remove all prior installations prior to installing the new version?
Thank you for responding to my incident.
2) 1) a) --> It was auto-updated (6.22) and then, i uninstalled the older versions (to 6.21), and the bug appeared. The 6.22 version disappeared from my "Programs & utilities" panel.
2) Yes --> Firefox on Radix EPCL based on java platform : http://www.epclradix.vd.ch/prod/dfj/epcl_radix_p.nsf/
I was resigned to wait the 6.23 version ;-)
Kind regards!
3) A window appears telling me there's a new version of Java I should download.
When I go through the procedure, my computer then tells me the program I'm
attempting to install is already in my computer. This has gone on since I got
this computer April 2010. In one case, within an hour of my going through this
obnoxious install/don't install procedure I once again had a window come up
telling me there was a new version of the program to install.
If this is someone other than Oracle, it's not apparent. The user agreement,
etc. are tagged for Oracle.
4) The reason for installing java was a message popping up in map24 that with
java more features are available e.g. starting a map in an additional
applet. This was not working although java was already installed. I tried to
reinstall but was not successful getting this function working. Other java
based applications were working what confused me. I also did not get this
java applet java.cpl in the control panel.
Basically fixed now after completely reinstalling XP.
5) I am just following the automatic alerts. The Java Update just pops up and says there is an update, so I said OK. It goes through all the dialog boxes
and (makes me refuse whatever browser toolbar is being slipped in) and then
downloads some files and says that the software is already installed - do I
want to reinstall. Answering yes or no does not seem to matter, the process
will happen again in week or two.
I only went to the Java site in an effort to make it stop.
Thanks for actually paying attention to this.
6) I keep getting the same update for Java 22. This same update has been repeatedly sent to me. If I install it I get the message "update already installed". Please don't ask me this question again. How many times can I explain this to you? Just answer why there is a problem with Java sending the same update repeatedly. Thank you.
