The new jre installation should preserve user's choice of selecting the old plug-in by default.
**** Tested configuration:
- x86 win 7 , XP
- jre 6u10, jre 7u4-b09
- browser: IE8, IE9
*** Steps to reproduce:
0) Install jre 6u10
1) Go to java control panel/ Advanced tab/ Java Plug-in to select the old java plug-in (by uncheck the boxc 'Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in')
2) Invoke IE to load an applet and make sure the old java plug-in is used
3) Install 7u4-b09
It is expected that the old plug-in from 7u4-b09 is used by default.
Repeat step#2 and if you see the new java plug-in used, the issue is reproducible
