Support correct dependencies from header files on windows and solaris

On linux, the compiler support creation of make dependency files that we use to track dependencies on header files. The visual studio compiler lack this feature. There are a couple of ways this can be worked around and we should look into fixing that.

On solaris the generated dependencies are broken and need patching to work with our makefiles.
