Resolution: Won't Fix

windows_xp
FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
Huh? I remember a past version called Java RTE. (gone after previous update)
ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
WinXPhe sp3 current
EXTRA RELEVANT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION :
AVG Internet Security 2013
Desktop & FiOS Router
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Attempt to install 'recommended' update fails, and leaves Java state indeterminate (Contradictorily determined by Oracle, Mozilla as 'not found' & XP as 'installed'(A/R Pgms)) & install (& uninstall?) program fails.
. Remove tool links for 'Removal tool' seem to only link to standard install tools.
. None of the mechanisms provided 'seem interested' in, or able to fix, or even identifying 'certain'? problems. Oracle should at least make it easy to find documentation for the error codes and program names we are expected to deal with for their potentially useful apps.
. (BTW: Most Oracle - Java sites do not make it easy for 'home users' to avoid being derailed to gamer, developer, & commercial complications.)
REGRESSION. Last worked in version 7u10
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
{It did work with 6. Frequency selection should include ? consistently, inconsistently, & once; My experience seems to be with at least a couple of 'bugs', but they are consistent for this update effort. }
On-line Java update >> -> " 3 billion... " ... " Installation Failed: ... interupted before Java 7 Update 25 could be completely installed. ...(try again later) " -> " BrowserLaunchError: 1314 "
Add/Remove Programs >> Java RE 7 update 10 >> remove --> .... " Fatal Error during installation " (despite the fact that it was a 'Remove' request)
(no further information provided by failure to remove)
Previous successful (partial) removal of /jre6/ , but same .... " Fatal Error " .
On-line attempt to use 'Java uninstall tool' -> jxpiinstall.exe !! (not uninstall !?!?!?) -> " 3 billion... " ... " Installation Failed: ... interupted before Java 7 Update 25 could be completely installed. ...(try again later) " -> " BrowserLaunchError: 1314 "
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
* Initially: automatic (chosen) removal of old version & install and verification of JRE7-25. Less 'advertising' for the program I'm already trying to install & McAfee which I obviously don't need.
* After failure: proper links to clearly (not misleadingly) named 'tools' for correction of related program & data structures.
ACTUAL -
As above.
ERROR MESSAGES/STACK TRACES THAT OCCUR :
What log? where? Oracle should have provided links to the log & error meanings in the error message, or made the error window 'cut & pasteable' for more convenient research by victim/user.
REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.
CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
sigh.
Attempted:
? Download and Install Java
? Use Java
? Test Java
? Remove Old Versions of Java
> Removal tool
> manual removal (no actual instructions found) complicated by no coherent description of Plug-in vs Install (if any distinction)
? Find Java
. " Security researchers recently discovered two gigantic security flaws in Java version 7 that allow hackers to silently take control of both PCs and Macs. " => Remove & disable Java failures might indicate such an attack? (no admission from Oracle on that issue).
