A change in JDK 8 (DriverManager.deregisterDriver() now requires an SQLPermission when running under a security manager - b89) can cause the current version of Java DB (10.10.1.1) in JDK 8 - same bits as released by Apache Foundation as Derby 10.10.1.1 - to fail.

This bug has been fixed in Java DB 10.10.1.2 (there is no parallel Apache release for this one).
Cf. bug fix in Derby https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-6224.
