Investigate ways of removing need for older gcc

      In JDK-8020628 it was discovered that the plugin needs to be compiled with an old enough gcc to be compatible with all the supported linux versions. It would be nice to remove this dependency so that everything could be compiled using the same compiler. See the other bug for a discussion on possible solutions.
