FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.7.0_51"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_51-b13)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 24.51-b03, mixed mode, sharing)
ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
EXTRA RELEVANT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION :
Windows Domain. Upgrading from Java 1.7 b25.
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Upon trying to upgrade an existing install of Java (This has occurred with update 40, 45 or 51). The installer seems to get caught in a loop trying to create the mimetype entries under:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MozillaPlugins\@java.com/JavaPlugin,version=10.51.2\MimeTypes\application/x-java-applet;version=
After creating the entry, it fails attempting to query it and then creates the next number in the series. This loop occurs again and again.
Once the user reboots, Windows fails to start since the software hive is either at maximum file size or corrupt. Replacing it with the valid one from "c:\windows\system32\Config\RegBack" is successful and often reattempting the Java installation succeeds without issue. On occasion the same problem occurs twice.
If desired, I have captured a Process Monitor log of the installer failing repeatedly, as well as other documentation although this bug report seemingly has no facilities to attach these resources.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
The problem is intermittent. In an enterprise, I have run into this problem 5 times and have not found a pattern among those it has happened to.
REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced rarely.
