A DESCRIPTION OF THE REQUEST :
The old sun Java version 1.6.0.24 worked fine with this applet but is now outdated and the new and latest update does not play the sound effects. It does play the music but it does not play the sound effects. The game runs fine but sound effects are an essential part of this game. The old SunJava version1.6.0.24 is now obsolete but there is no satisfactory alternative. I have tried many workarounds but there is none to compensate and the latest Java release is the only one that works with the game engine without crashing. Unfortunately the sound effects are totally silent and only the music plays which makes the game useless. This is not meant as lighthearted as this game is important to a great variety of people worldwide including many disabled and housebound people and incorporates a worldwide social network.
JUSTIFICATION :
The MMORPG game Runescape is played by millions of people world-wide. Also Linux is a major platform and should be able to use new releases of Java with full functionality. Players using Linux who update Java lose their sound effects. I have read this same problem in multiple Linux and Runescape forums. Solutions that are offered are complicated, break safety and privacy protocols and are unsatisfactory or cause system and game crashes. An Official Google site is offering 100% music with Linux using Java but after following the advice given it does not play these sound effects.

CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
Installing GNOME Alsa player and unmuting everything, installing restricted Ubuntu extras, installing icedtea plugin with sun-java6.jre after removing Ubuntu 11.04 replacing with Ubuntu 10.10 (32) and installing updates without Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.9rc2 . Policy tool set to max memory by default.
Using this formula the sound effects work but game crashes, sometimes system crashes
