When ChoiceBox is wider than its preferred width width of its pop-up is still preferred and its location is not connected to mouse position. So if the user clicks right end with down arrow to open the list, the list is opened at the left end of the ChoiceBox which is inconvenient as mouse cursor is away from the list. Another aspect is that the list visually is not connected correctly to the control if it has smaller width.
