HelloSanity has a Robot screen capture test which is currently failing on Mac and imx6.
It should be possible to show the returned pixels visually, using WritableImage (introduced in fx 2.2)
I would probably:
increase the size of the captured area (currently 160x1) to be the test pattern plus some border
create a popup to show the resulting image
