When you do Font.getDefault() you should get a synthetic font back called "system" that maps to the current system font on the current platform and the current size of the system font. For example:

Windows XP: Tahoma 8pt
Windows 7: Segoe UI 11pt
Mac: LucidaGrande 12pt
