Take a look at the attachments. The first one is an FX app that uses javafx.ext.Swing components, and the second one is a native Swing apps on the same machine. The reason for it is that FX uses the cross platform look and feel (ocean) and the native Swing app uses MacOSX's native LAF, which looks much better.
I'd recommend using the native LAF as the fallback.
