There are currently a few bugs open against SplitMenuButton related to the property "useSelectedItem". After evaluating RT-15189, I have reached the conclusion that we can not implement the specified behavior for the property in a satisfactory way.
Trying to limit the scope of the functionality will only lead to confusion and lots of bug reports.
It is quite simple for a developer to implement the behavior they want without this property, by changing the label in the action handler for the menu items.
