Transition to full screen from applet causes serious flashing

Testing with the Full Screen App (/deployed/FullScreenApp/FSApp.html). When the app transitions from within an applet to the full screen mode, there are several screen flashes which are very distracting. If the app is deployed in Web Start, or run directly from the JAR file, there is no flashing observed. Happens on my XP machine, but not on my Vista machine -- even though they both have the same hardware.
