A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
When starting Swing applications using the Windows native L&F, an NPE is thrown. When starting the same applications using Nimbus or a third party L&F, little 8x8 squares are randomly cut out of font glyphs as they are rendered.
Disabling DirectX rendering via command-line switches allows non-native L&Fs to run without trouble, but the Windows L&F still fails to start.
REGRESSION. Last worked in version 7u51

The application launches.
ACTUAL -
The splash screen remains displayed indefinitely.

This bug can be reproduced always.
