A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
The download link for the mp3 plugin is currently broken, but it is still possible to download and install JMF.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/download-137625.html
The instructions are also not very thorough at all and I tried for two straight days to install the mp3 plugin to no avail. I made the most progress once I had the mp3 plugin downloaded from elsewhere and put it in lib/ext for the Java installation and then installed JMF. Once I installed JMF it helped to run the JMF registry editor as an administrator, otherwise the changes would not persist. Afterwards I was finally able to run the command in the mp3 plugin tutorial. It completed successfully but there is an invocation exception. I am still unable to get the Java/Sun sound API to recognize mp3's as a supported format however.
It would be nice to have the instructions updated by someone that is able to actually get the mp3 plugin working. It would also be nice if an installer could be created that handles all of this for Java end users, much like the installer for the DirectX runtime redistributable.
It seems through a simple Google search that not very many people at all can successfully install the mp3 plugin.
