Use of special keys INCLUDING DELETE echo $<n> sequences when not using xterm-256color (example vt100), effectively quelling jshell and jjs interactive use. So it’s not detecting the term setting correctly.

Workaround is to change the Advanced preference Term to xterm-256color and restarting session.
