At present, someone building OpenJDK 8u is required to know the correct update version, build number and milestone to produce a build with the correct version output. This works well when builds are being produced from one source (e.g. Oracle), but becomes problematic when builds are being made by multiple downstreams, such as the various GNU/Linux distributions, as the correct version information may not be conveyed.
The intention of this bug is to set the correct values in common/autoconf/version-numbers so a build produces the expected output by default, unless overridden by the user.
Multiple changesets are expected for this bug, so the version data can be updated as needed, as part of the usual tagging process.
