If chunkfiles are removed from the JFR repository (defaulting to /tmp) during flight, an Error can be thrown, and the JFR Periodic Tasks is ended. This makes the disk rotation stop working, making JFR adding data to one single chunkfile which grows well beyond any maxsizes set, and effectively fills up all available disk space.
