A number of users have reported issues arising while 'hot-swapping' the JDK during some CPU release upgrades. However, this mechanism of updating the JDK is incorrect, the JDK and its related processes must be fully stopped before replacing or updating the JDK.

A documentation update is required, possibly in the JDK installation guide, to clarify that overwriting a JDK installation while a Java process is still running is not supported and may lead to unpredictable behavior.
