AFAIK, the intended behavior on the Java Application page is to use the chart legend selection to decide which events to forward to Properties and Stack Trace view.
This is currently not working.

The only way to get a subset of the events forwarded, for example only the profiling events, is to select a lane in the chart.

There has been lots of discussions and change in this area, but judging by the code in JavaApplicationPage:287, in the getDefaultSelection method, it looks like we intend for the chart legend selection to be used.
