FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.4.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0-b92)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0-b92, mixed mode)
FULL OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION :
Microsoft Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP2 Simplified Chinese Ver.
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
The Chinese font used by Java Look and Feel is not
optimized. It is not smoothed nor bitmapped. The Motif and
Windows Looks and Feels are OK. The font they used
(Simsung, TTF) is bitmapped for the size they use (9pt,
12px). Simsung (Song Ti) has built-in bitmap glyphs for
9pt, 10.5pt, and 12pt sizes, and is smoothed for 19pt or
greater sizes. I suppose this might be a font mapping issue
or font size problem.
As I remember, this problem exists on other Windows
platforms, such as Windows 98, too. Appletviewer in JDK
1.3.1 seems to use the Windows Look and Feel, so its font
looks good; while the Java Plug-in control panel seems to
use the Java Look and Feel and suffers the same problem.
So this problem really discourages Chinese users from using
the Java Look and Feel, which, in my humble opinions, in
very bad. I love the Java Look and Feel.
-----------------------------------------------
However, the display really changed a bit. It is now in
bold fonts so is a little bit better. However, it is still
ugly. Please have a look at
Normal Chinese:

A dialogue (notice the smooth Chinese display in the middle
and the ugly Chinese for "Yes" and "No" below:

The Notepad application in Java Web Start:

Java Web Start (notice the unsmooth Chinese display and
esp. the colons before "Sun Micro...", "http://...", and "a
simple..."):

Java(tm) Plug-in Control Panel:

I really would very much like to see English instead of the
ugly Chinese.
If a Chinese version of Star Office is so ugly, I will
never consider using it.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
1. Just open any localized Chinese application of Java look
and feel, e.g. Java Plug-in control panel applet.
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
A smooth display.
This bug can be reproduced always.
CUSTOMER WORKAROUND :
Using Windows Look and Feel.
