All japanese multibyte fonts appear strangely when displayed in bold style on win2k with JDK 1.4.x. These fonts display properly using 1.3.1_0x, but on 1.4.1_0x the display is deterioated. This issue does not happen with single byte fonts, for example "Comic Sans MS"
The problem can also be seen with 1.4.2 beta. You can reproduce the problem using the 2 test programs attatched to this report using either Windows 2000 (Japanese) or Windows 2000 (English with Japanese locale as system default). I've also attatched screen shots which shows the difference between the display
in 1.3.1 vs. 1.4.1.
