FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.4.2_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_03-b02, mixed mode)
ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
Windows XP Pro SP2
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
I had JRE 1.4.2_03 installed on my PC, and the JVM worked fine. I then installed JRE 1.3.1_16 for a specific application, and the 1.3.1_16's install broke the 1.4.2_03 JVM. According to defect #6232087, this issue was supposed to have been fixed in 1.3.1_16. The Database would not allow me to comment on #6232087, which is why I'm submitting a new entry.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Take a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine. Install JRE 1.4.2_03. Test the JVM. It works. Install JRE 1.3.1_16. Choose NOT to associate 1.3.1_16 with either browser. Test the JVM. Note that it's broken.
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
I would have expected 1.3.1_16 to install without stomping on 1.4.2_03's JVM. The 1.4.2_03's JVM should have been associated with Internet Explorer after the 1.3.1_16's install.
ACTUAL -
Internet Explorer behaved as if it had no JVM associated with it.
REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.
CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
Workaround - Use version 1.3.0_02 JRE. Do not install 1.3.1 JRE.
